Yankees vs Red Sox Preview 7/15-7/18: Covid Edition

***Edit*** This was supposed to be a Series Preview before the Yankees got fucked up by Covid, so maybe enjoy the little bit of optimism I had before this news, if you want to, and watch my reaction to the news as it came out

Yankees vs Red Sox Preview 7/15-7/18

The Bombers start their second half tonight tomorrow night, beginning a four game series with the first place Red Sox. The Yankees (46-43) enter the second half of their schedule 8 games behind the Red Sox (55-36) for first place in the AL East and 4.5 games behind the Oakland Athletics (52-40) for the second Wild Card spot after their nightmare first half of the year. Winners of five of their last seven games entering the All Star Break, this series will be a play a huge factor in determining how they play out the rest of their season. Will they look like the confident team, who was having fun playing baseball, that we saw about to sweep the Astros this last weekend? Or are will we get the team who has been taking the field for the majority of the first half of their season, who have looked lost and sorry for themselves any time something goes wrong, especially after giving up six runs in the ninth inning to blow the game on Sunday and ruin what would have been a sweep in Houston.

The trade deadline is coming up in almost two weeks, and how the Bronx Bombers come out of the gate could determine whether they decide to be buyers at the deadline, or if they’ll sit on their hands and wait for the offseason to make some changes. A good series against the Sox could give them the momentum they need to start the second half of their season. Now lets look at the matchups for the upcoming four game slate.

Tonight, 7:00 PM, ESPN

Pitching Matchup: Domingo German (4-5) 4.44 ERA vs. Eddy Rodriguez (6-5) 5.52 ERA

*Edit* This game literally just got cancelled minutes before I finished writing this. As of now, I don't know what the plan is for a makeup game, but I'd assume it goes on either tomorrow or Saturday. I would also assume both teams stick with this pitching matchup for whenever game one is, and slide everyone else down accordingly.

****Edit**** Now that all this news has dropped, who knows what the hell the Yankees are going to do from here as they have 6 positive tests (with Marly Rivera reporting that 2 are position players), and with only Cortes and Peralta on the Covid IL so far, who knows which two are the unnamed pitchers.

Tomorrow 7/16, 7:05 PM, YES

Pitching Matchup: Jordan Montgomery (3-4) 4.16 ERA vs. Martin Perez (7-5) 4.04 ERA

Saturday 7/17, 7:15 PM, Fox

Pitching Matchup: Gerrit Cole (9-4) 2.68 ERA vs. Nathan Eovaldi (9-5) 3.66 ERA

Sunday 7/18, 7:00 PM, ESPN

Pitching Matchup: Jameson Taillon (4-4) 4.90 ERA vs. Nick Pivetta (7-4) 4.30 ERA

No lineups have been announced for tonight as of me writing this, so I cannot look at that in this preview, however the Yankees have announced that they were placing both Nestor Cortes and Wandy Peralta on the Covid-19 Injured List, but were also reinstating Zack Britton from the 10-Day IL. So, again, as we’ve seen all season, as we get someone back from the IL, we lose more people to the IL. Other than that I have no other news to add to this, so all I will say is: LETS FUCKING GO YANKEES (please don’t be miserable in the second half)!

**Edit** So this should be fun! Exactly the start to the second half that this team needed!

*****Edit***** Well, they're already pretty miserable and the second half hasn't even started. Great! This team is cursed!

******Edit****** Yikes! I feel like it's gotta be Chapman since the other two that we know of are both also bullpen guys. Welp. This is great, thanks for coming with me on my "The Yankees Got Fucked Up By Covid" journey.
