Player Update: The Novelty of Isiah Kiner-Falefa

Image
Photo credit: NJ.com Admit it: Isiah Kiner-Falefa wasn't your pick for starting shortstop for the Yankees while they were making their offseason moves. Trevor Story and Carlos Correa were on the market.  You watched in agony as each of them came off the board in the free agency fever dream after the MLB lockout.  And the Yankees, in Hal-Cashman era fashion, end up with IKF (who was originally traded to the Twins but was literally freed up so that they can go get Correa… AGONY, right?).  And then you realize that you were in for a surprise. While IKF got off to a rough start in Pinstripes, he has more than righted the ship in recent weeks.   According to the New York Post ’s Joel Sherman, IKF “initially struggled on both sides of the ball -- a few bobbles mixed with a 6-for-28, seven-strikeout first 10 games.”  But, as of May 5th, he is hitting .311 (23-for-74), with 15 runs, seven RBIs and five walks.  And unlike a parade of his teammates, he’s done all of that without hitting a si

Yankees stay hot, take 2 of 3 from Blue Jays

The Yankees remained hot against the second-best team in the AL East this week, extending their winning streak to 11 before dropping the final game of the series last night. Coming into the off day, the Yankees are tied for the most wins in the MLB with the Mets and hold the best record in the league courtesy of the Mets’ two extra losses. Photo Credit: AP Photo

BBBets 4/28

Image
Welcome back to the first BBBets in two weeks! I took a nice long break following a very rough 0-5 day of picks, the worst of which being a Braves moneyline bet in a game in which they ended up losing to the Padres 12-1. Before that day I was 7-2 in bets given out for a net positive of +3.59 units. After that day I am looking at 7-7 in bets that I’ve given out for a net negative of -1.31 units. One bad day ruins quite the promising start to the season. While I am slightly positive in all of my MLB bets this season (including the bets I hadn’t given out), I want to get my record back on track and move my net losses back into the net gains on my BBBets picks. With that said, let’s get to the bets.

Bronx Bomber Bets 4/14/22

Image
Hello everybody and welcome again to BBBets, your favorite place to come inconsistently for gambling picks that, so far this season, are doing really well if I do say so myself. As things stand, in the two days that I have given out picks, I have gone 4-1 (Opening Day Friday) followed by a solid 3-1 showing (Monday) for a total of +3.59 units if you are betting one unit on every pick. We’re looking to continue this nice streak today, and I have 5 bets that I really like today. GOOD MORNING!! We have some bets for you today as @nicksims14 tries to stay hot on the season🔥🔥🔥 pic.twitter.com/ByQZTUxlVt — Bronx Bomber Ball (@BronxBomberBall) April 14, 2022 Let's start with the 1:10 game on the  bet slip, Rays vs. A's. In this game, I like the  Rays -1.5 (-110). The Athletics won the matchup between these two teams yesterday 4-2 in a matchup between Frankie Montas and Shane McClanahan, and I like the Rays to take the game today by at least a couple runs. Next we have Cardinals

Bronx Bomber Bets 4/12/22

Image
Hello and welcome again to Bronx Bomber Bets! This will be our second BBBets of the season, with the first being last Friday where I started 4-1. I didn’t give out any bets this weekend, but had an overall pretty solid weekend, and then saved myself yesterday by not giving out any picks (I had the graphic made and had began a blog) on a day where I ended up going 1-3. I’m gearing up to end that cold streak at one day today, and I have 4 bets that I think will return my hands to their heat from this weekend. It’s just picks from me again today, but hopefully later this season we start getting bets from our other two resident degenerates at BBB, Andrew and Luigi.

First (And Maybe Last) Bronx Bomber Bets of the Season

Hello all and welcome back to your favorite yearly tradition that slowly disappears by mid June! Hopefully that is not the case this season, and the best bettors in the world to fade just become the best bettors in the world period.

Top 10: Keys to early season success for the Yankees

Image
We've finally arrived. Opening Day is upon us.  It's coming a week later than expected. The team doesn't look the way we expected them to when the offseason began six long months ago.  But here we are.  The Yankees chose not to make any of the marquee acquisitions Twitter lost their mind over all Winter, but at the end of the day they plugged some holes, and bring a much more versatile and athletic club into the 2022 season.  Did they do enough to dethrone the likes of Boston or Tampa or keep the quickly ascending Toronto Blue Jays at bay? Only time will tell.  In "The Late Show with David Letterman" fashion, here are our Top 10 factors to the Yankees getting off to a fast start. Photo Credit: Adam Hunger/Associated Press 10.      Playing strong defense It’s no shock that the New York Yankees were a defensive nightmare at times during the 2021 season and they made a point of addressing those issues in the offseason.   According to FieldingBible.com , the Yankees

4/8-4/10 Season/Series Preview: Red Sox @ Yankees

Image
With mere hours to go before the Yankees kick off their 2022 campaign, we’ve reached the point that even a few weeks ago we thought may never come. We finally get to witness Yankee baseball today! An added bonus on top of that is that today’s season opener comes against the rival Boston Red Sox, the team that booted the Yankees out of last season’s playoffs. The Yankees’ season begins with a tough 10 game stretch against division opponents and this season opening series against the Red Sox at home provides the Yankees with a golden opportunity to make a statement and get off to a great start. The team has come under scrutiny for their approach to free agency and team building this offseason. In spite of all that noise, the team performed well this spring and now stands ready to take the field in the Bronx. Lets take a look at some matchups. Yankees agree to terms with all arbitration eligible players except Judge

Image
On Tuesday evening, the New York Yankees agreed to terms with all but one of their arbitration eligible players, the one being star right-fielder Aaron Judge who is seeking a long-term extension with the club.   The Yankees have not gone to an arbitration hearing with any of their players since the 2017 debacle with Dellin Betances.   Aaron Judge has requested a salary of $21 million for the 2022 season and the Yankees have countered with an offer of $17 million.   If the two sides cannot settle in the middle or reach that extension, they’ll head for a hearing, which due to the delays brought on by the lockout, will likely occur in-season.

BREAKING: Yankees trade Luke Voit to San Diego; acquire prospect Lange

Image
Minutes before the Yankees took the field for their first spring training game, Brian Cashman struck a trade that, at this point, became inevitable. Luke Voit is headed to the San Diego Padres in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Justin Lange. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman was first with the news. Photo Credit: AP Voit became expendable after the Yankees re-signed Anthony Rizzo to a two-year, $32 million deal late Tuesday night, so it was only a matter of time before a move came to fruition. This brings an end to Voit’s tenure in the Bronx that few could’ve predicted just a year ago, after he led the league in home runs (22) and finished ninth in AL MVP voting during the shortened 2020 season. 2021, however, was not as kind to the Missouri product, as he battled a multitude of injuries and a loss of playing time down the stretch en route to a .239/.328/.437 slash. With the National League adopting the designated hitter as part of baseball’s new collective bargaining agreement, th

BREAKING: Yankees re-sign 1B Anthony Rizzo to a 2-year, $32 million contract

Image
After a week or so of speculation who the team would negotiate with for it’s first base opening for the 2022 season, the Yankees finally have their man.   Late Tuesday evening, the Yankees re-signed free agent Anthony Rizzo to a two-year contract.   Rizzo, who was acquired at last year’s trade deadline, was a fine first baseman for the ballclub in 2021, but with higher end options available this offseason – namely Matt Olson from Oakland via a trade, or Freddie Freeman in free agency – this feels like a disappointment.

Thank you, Paul: Yankees to retire Paul O'Neill's number

Image
Photo credit: MLB.com The Yankees announced on February 22nd that they will be retiring No. 21 to honor the career of the great Paul O'Neill. O’Neill (who gave me my first-ever introduction to the Who’s ‘Baba O’Reilly’ as a kid as I’d watch him walk into the batter’s box) was a fan favorite especially for those of us who became Yankees fans thanks to the 1996-2001 group.  His continued commitment to the Yankees as a YES Network announcer (along with David Cone) is a reminder of a different time.  Per Yankees beat writer Bryan Hoch , “Paul O’Neill Day” will be celebrated at Yankee Stadium, featuring a number retirement ceremony, on August 21, 2022 prior to the start of the Yankees/Blue Jays game schedule to take place (barring any delays related to the CBA negotiations).  O’Neill will go down as the 23rd Yankee to have his number retired, and all guests in attendance on August 21 will receive a commemorative ticket.  Over his nine seasons as a Yankee, O’Neill hit .303 with 158 home

2022 Bronx Bomber Ball Hall of Fame mock vote

Image
Tonight, there is a semblance of normal in the baseball world for the first time in nearly two months. The results of the 2022 BBWAA Hall of Fame vote will be revealed at 6 PM on MLB Network. And for the sixth consecutive year, the writers of Bronx Bomber Ball participated in a mock vote of our own. Photo Credit: MLB.com Per BBWAA guidelines, each voter is allotted 10 votes, though they are not obligated to use all (or any) of them. Players that receive a vote on 75% of ballots cast will be enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.  This year’s ballot unquestionably holds the highest stakes we’ve seen in recent years. It’s the last call for some of the game’s greatest icons in Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa, whose candidacies have been shrouded by their use of steroids. Newcomers Alex Rodriguez and David Ortiz, though beloved by their teams’ respective fanbases, were also linked to PEDs at points in their careers.  Nevertheless, our team largely decided that wasn’t en

NEWS: Yankees sign #1 International Prospect SS Roderick Arias

Image
Early Saturday morning, the New York Yankees agreed to terms with the #1 International Prospect , 17-year-old shortstop Roderick Arias. Per sources, the deal will be for $4 million – a huge chunk of the club’s $5.18 million International Signing Bonus Pool – but one necessary to land a prospect as highly touted as Arias.  The Yankees were rumored to be the favorites as early back as last summer, but the deal was reported on the 15th. The Yankees have not formally announced the deal yet. Per MLB Pipeline, using their 20-80 scale, Arias has a 60-hit grade and 55 grade in all other categories (power, run, arm, fielding).   He is a true five-tool player and a dangerous asset for the Yankees to add to the pipeline along with other top prospects Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe.   At just 17 years of age, Arias is not considered a threat to make the Major League club any time soon, so his addition should not block Volpe’s path to the Bronx, or perhaps the addition of superstar fre
